Gerda Weissmann Klein Assignment #1: Death Marches and Evacuations

Gerda Weissmann was held in several slave-labor camps, including this one, where she worked the looms in a factory setting.  She and the others lived in the building on the left; newly arriving prisoners were housed in the building on the right.  She and the other girls and young women were transferred to two other camps after this one before beginning the death march.  * Courtesy of Teaching Tolerance

The map below shows the routes of the death marches and evacuations carried out by the Nazis on prisoners in ghettos, concentration and extermination camps.
The key in the top right-hand corner shows the measurement of 50 miles.  Gerda survived a 350-mile death march in the bitter cold of winter.

Using the internet, find somewhere approximately 350 miles away from our school.  How does this help you further understand the importance of Gerda Weissmann Klein's story of survival?    Respond to what you have found in the comments section.  Make sure you note the destination 350 miles away from HOMS, and try to find one that no one else in the class has chosen.

  1. Chicago is about 350 miles away from the school. This helps me understand the importance of Gerdas story because its shows how far she had to walk. It also helps me understand the distance a lot better.

  2. I think Detroit is around 350 miles away from here, maybe a little more, so I could understand how difficult it would be to march all the way from Prior Lake to Detroit with minimal food, water, and time to rest.

  3. Milwaukee Wisconsin is 355 miles away from school, that shows me how much will to survive they had because it would be were hard to make it there in the dead of winter, with enough clothes and food to make it there let alone little or no clothes or food.

  4. Going into Canada is about 350 and that shows me how far it would be for the Jews.

  5. Going from Prior Lake to Omaha, Nebraska is just about 350 miles and when I look on the map, you are pretty much walking the distance of a whole state! That definetly shows how much she had to go through and then adding in everything else (Hunger, cold, no shoes, etc) would make it so much worse.

  6. Sheyenne north Dakota is about 350 miles away from Hidden Oaks middle school this shows me how far they had to suffer and how they had to walk in the brutal changing weather for so long.

  7. Pierre, South Dakota is 350 miles away from HOMS. I drove to there once and it took me about 9 hours and I thought that was brutal! It shows me how hard it would be walking in the cold in 3 feet of snow with no food and little clothing.

  8. From Hidden Oaks Middle School to Jamestown, North Dakota is about 343 miles away. Which is almost a 5 hour drive. This really puts in perspective how the people must have felt during the death march. This is completely terrifying.

  9. From HOMS to Clinton,Illinois is about 350 miles which is a 5 hour and 30 min drive. this would really suck to walk all that way just to go somewhere.

  10. Going all the way from Prior Lake to Chicago to a little over 350 miles. This helps me realize just how far they really had to walk with no food or water. Also barley any clothes and all in the freezing cold. It was an extremely difficult march for them to do and in the circumstances they were in. So I think it Is really important that she made it.

  11. This helps me understand that importance of Gerda W. and how far she had to travel by walking. If i had to walk 350 miles away from here it would be all the way to Canada - Ontario - Thunder Bay that is how far. That is a long way from here i can see why so many people died in the death march that must feel defistating. So it's from Hidden Oaks Middle school to Canada - Ontario - Thunder Bay that is 305 miles away from here the closet to 350 miles is U.S.A. - South Dakota - Pierre. That is a long way if i had to do the death march i would probably be already dead.

  12. Going from Prior Lake to Pierre South Dakota is 340 miles, it helps me understand the extreme conditions with little to no food, its really very scary that someone had the control over other human beings like that, and it also very tragic.

  13. this helped me understand the importance of Gerda W. and how far she had to travel be foot and no food. If I were to walk 350 miles away from my house i would end up being in Clinton ,Illinois. that would be how far the death march would have been. if you drove there it would take approximitly 5 and a half hours there by car! In my opinion thats crazy to walk that far with no food and water. This helped me realize how far they had to travel by foot. i think it was very important that she made it without dieing.

  14. My mom was born in Milwaukee. my grandma and grandpa live in West Allis, we drive there a few times a year. I cant even imagine what it would be like to walk there. Before my family moved to our new house I use to live in an apartment and had to share a room with 3 other girls.. I think their lives must have been so un bearable and very difficult. I have a new appreciation when my mom drives me places instead of walking. Hidden Oaks Middle School is approximately 348.82 miles away from my Grandparents house.

  15. I was on Google Earth looking for a place that would be very close to 350 miles. It made me cry when I typed in Duluth and found out that it was only around 180 miles away from Hidden Oaks. I thought that it would be too far,but it ended up being almost half of the number of miles I needed to have. I've been on road trips with my family to Duluth and it has taken a long time to get there. I ended up finding a place called Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin, which ended up being around 342 miles. My dad came downstairs to check on how I was doing with my homework and he was shocked to hear that they had to walk that far in the middle of winter. His first response was, "I would of died, I'm sure anybody would of." That's when it really hit me, lots of people did die on those death marches. Not only did they have to walk that far, they had no food, some had no clothes or shoes even, no water, and nobody to help them. This really made me realize how horrible it was to have to go on these death marches. I am never going to complain about having to walk my dog for 15 minutes knowing what they had to suffer through.

    1. What a great response, Courtney. It is unbelievable to think of what was done to human beings, and also of what a triumph of the human spirit it was for Gerda Weissmann Klein to survive and tell her story. I like how you connected it to something in your own life, like walking your dog. That's one thing Ms. Klein still talks about today: enjoying the simple things in life, because when they're taken away from you, it's then that you see what truly matters. We (myself included) complain about a lot of things that really don't matter in the long run, don't we? Thank you for your thoughtfulness in this assignment.

  19. Norfolk, Nebraska is about 350 miles away from Hidden Oaks. It seems like a really far distance, especially during cold weather. The fact that she survived that has shocked me. I wonder if the Americans didn't show up during the walk, if she would've survived the whole thing.

  20. Milwaukee, Wisconsin is around 345 miles from HOMS. This helps me understand the importance of her survival beacuse if you think about it, thats a really long walk especially in the conditions she had. The fact that she survived tells me she was a really strong person and also very brave.
